New arena floor at Thorsby rec complex nearing completion

THORSBY -- The new arena floor at Thorsby's Arctic Spas Rec Complex is expected to be completed on schedule.

The major project officially got underway in late March after the township identified concerns relating to a worsening brine leak in the more than 40-year-old arena floor. Several leaks had been treated in years past using sealant; however, a full replacement was decided on after a technical review determined that the sealant was no longer holding.

Demolition of the former arena floor took place in April, which included the removal of all of the concrete, boards, and piping, and the installation of the new floor began in mid-May. This involved the installation of the new piping and base work followed by the pouring of the new concrete during the summer. Thorsby Mayor Darryl Hostyn says that after the cement fully cures, the final step will be putting the ice in.

"We anticipate that by about the second week of September we should be ready for hockey," said Mayor Hostyn. "They've already pressure dried the lines, and there shouldn't be difficulties."

The project cost came in at just over $1,000,000, with funding supported through both the Town of Thorsby as well as Leduc County. Mayor Hostyn says that the new arena floor will have a noticeable difference for both the town and users of the arena. 

"We've got to thank our partner, Leduc County, for doing their share," said Hostyn. "It's going to be more efficient, less wear and tear in the plant, probably less on our power and electrical bills, so it's going to be great. We've always had a good quality but I think it should be even better now."

Last month, Mayor Hostyn, Councillors Musson and Watson, recreation staff, and CAO Donna Tona were invited by Bry Sand Arena Specialists to hold a special loonie and toonie tossing ceremony at the arena. This saw the dignitaries plant the Canadian coins in the cement at centre ice in hopes of bringing good fortune in the future. After the ice has been reinstalled at the arena, the Town of Thorsby says another ceremony will be held to mark the finalization of the major project.
