A ground-breaking ceremony was held on Thursday for a new 50,000 sq-foot airside cargo facility at the Edmonton International Airport.

The major project, which is being undertaken in partnership between YEG and Terracap Management, comes as part of the airport's new International Cargo Hub which was launched earlier this year. Once completed, the new facility will have direct frontage on Apron VIII, allowing cargo to move between freighter aircraft and the warehouse.

Myron Keehn, President and CEO of the Edmonton International Airport, says the new airside cargo facility will also add capacity for time-sensitive freight, including e-commerce, perishables, pharmaceuticals, and aviation parts. He tells 93.1 The One that projects of this nature, and the continual economic growth of the airport, has positive benefits for the entire Leduc region.

"It drives the regional economy," said Keehn. "It's no surprise that Leduc County, the City of Leduc, Devon, and Beaumont, are some of the fastest growing municipalities as the airport is growing -- they're linked together. And, we need those communities to grow, because we need people to fill the jobs that are here. We have a great symbiotic relationship with our partners, and work very closely with all of the municipalities. I can't say enough about Leduc County and the City of Leduc, they're great to work with."

The Edmonton International Airport's International Cargo Hub began as a public investment from the federal government in the way of $118 million through the National Trade Corridors Fund. The area encompasses more than 2,000 acres of serviced development land and is intended to support future cargo, logisitics, and trade-related development.

"Strategic public investments in infrastructure help create the conditions for private investment and economic growth," said Tanni Doblanko, Mayor of Leduc County. The 65 Avenue Interchange, completed in 2025, has improved the connectivity around Edmonton International Airport, and Terracap's new cargo facility is a tangible example of private-sector investment, job creation, and economic opportunity that can result."

YEG is Canada's fifth-busiest airport by passenger traffic and the largest major Canadian airport by land area, generating an economic output of more than $5.4 billion and supporting nearly 23,000 jobs.
