BEAUMONT -- The next stage of development for Beaumont's Coloniale Estates neighbourhood will include a street named after former resident Ryan Shtuka.

Beaumont City Council approved the move at their regular meeting on Oct. 13, 2026, as a way to commemorate Shtuka and his contributions to the local community. Shtuka went missing in Sun Peaks, British Columbia, in the early morning hours of Feb. 17, 2018, after traveling to the area from Beaumont just before his 21st birthday. He had been at the Sun Peaks resort, located 45 minutes outside Kamloops, for only two and a half months before his disappearance.

The idea to commemorate Ryan Shtuka was originally brought forward by Councillor Nathan Netelenbos in April of this year. His motion called on Beaumont staff to provide a report outlining potential locations, associated costs, and a recommended approach to establishing a commemoration of remembrance. Following this work, administration brought forward several options for the commemoration. Ultimately, it was decided that the city will name one of the new streets included in the next phase of the Coloniale Estates neighbourhood after the former resident.

"It's going to be in a new development, so there's no need to change any existing signs, and it won't affect existing residents," said Councillor Netelenbos. "Basically, this motion is about recognizing the lasting impact that Ryan Shtuka has provided our community, and ensuring that his legacy continues to be a part of Beaumont for generations to come."

Other options included renaming a park or playground, hosting a community event in his honour, or adding a commemorative bench. It was eventually decided that renaming a new street after Shtuka would have the lowest impact on residents while providing recognition for him and his family. According to Beaumont staff, the cost of the street naming would be approximately $2,000.

"While I did not know Ryan personally, I've had many conversations with folks who knew him," said Netelenbos. "One common theme always emerges: his leadership, kindness, and welcoming nature."

Despite major search efforts by his parents and volunteers, along with significant media coverage over the last eight years, no trace of Ryan Shtuka has ever been found. The case remains open to this day, and anyone with information can contact their local police.
