BEAUMONT -- The City of Beaumont will be unveiling its new memorial cenotaph on Remembrance Day.
Plans for the new cenotaph first came before Beaumont Council last year with the goal of creating a dedicated monument for the city's future Remembrance Day ceremonies. It will be located on the traffic circle near the entrance of the Beaumont Sport and Recreation Centre and will be unveiled to the public on Nov. 11.
"The new cenotaph represents an important milestone for the community, creating a dedicated, permanent place to remember and honour those who have served and sacrificed for Canada," reads a statement from the City of Beaumont. "During the ceremony, the cenotaph will be consecrated, a formal act of dedicating the site as a place of remembrance, reflection and honour."
The design for the cenotaph was approved last year in collaboration with local members of the Royal Canadian Legion. It will include a raised monument with a sword at the back, and two sides with the Canadian Commonwealth war emblem. Beaumont staff say that this design provides space for future inscriptions or plaques to be added, and was also deemed to be the most resistant to vandalism.
Beaumont's 2026 Remembrance Day ceremony will take place outdoors in the BSRC parking lot, rather than its previous location of inside the Field House. Residents attending in person are encouraged to dress for November weather and be prepared to stand outdoors for the duration of the ceremony.
A livestream will be available online for those unable to attend the ceremony in person.
