LEDUC -- Local members of the Royal Canadian Legion will be launching this year's Poppy Campaign this coming Saturday.
The annual campaign aims to support local veterans and their families while honouring their sacrifices and contributions to Canada. The campaign will formally commence on Saturday, Oct. 24, and include Remembrance activities across Leduc County, Leduc, Beaumont, Nisku, and New Sarepta. Leduc Branch 108 President Lynda Greenwood talks about the meaning behind the annual initiative.
"The poppy represents a visual pledge to honour veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today," said Greenwood. "This year, the Poppy Campaign starts on October 24th."
The Poppy Campaign Headquarters for the Leduc area will operate from the Alberta Legacy Development Society office on 47 Street, Leduc, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 10. As part of this year's Remembrance activities, Legion members will be attending school Remembrance Day presentations across the municipality and supporting Cadet and Scout poppy blitz initiatives.
"All of us here, as well as everyone in Leduc County, understand the importance of the poppy, the importance of remembrance, and the importance of the sacrifices that our relatives, grandparents, and everyone made so we can live a free life," said Tanni Doblanko, Mayor of Leduc County.
The local Legion will once again be hosting its Remembrance Day Service inside the Leduc Recreation Centre on Nov. 11, as well as an informal gathering with veterans hosted at the LRC following the ceremony.
