LEDUC -- Leduc City Council will consider plans to increase transit service to Edmonton during their upcoming budget deliberations.

This will come as part of the greater discussion surrounding transit service levels in the City of Leduc, with a focus on Route #1 service from Leduc to Edmonton. Currently, the service runs Monday to Friday, while possible changes could see that service expanded to Saturday and Sunday as well. The current service runs during peak hours and departs from 50 Street in Leduc with a final destination of Century Park LRT station in Edmonton.

"To address increasing ridership and requests for expanded service, the Route #1 service level adjustment would add seven service hours per weekday, providing one additional morning trip, and three additional afternoon trips," said Abigail Bilsky, Leduc Transit Supervisor. "It would also introduce Saturday and Sunday service, with a combined 37 service hours across the weekend."

Bilsky says that weekend service has been in high demand from the business community as many have pressures of attracting and retaining employees. Residents have also been requesting a direct link between Leduc and Edmonton on weekends to better align with their travel needs.

Ridership on Route #1 continues to experience growth with a 9 per cent increase comparing 2026 year-to-date with 2025, and a 31 per cent increase compared to pre-COVID-19 numbers. The route has maintained essentially the same schedule since it was implemented in 2014, with a few variations in routing over the years that accommodated requests from the public and businesses.

"The public wants to have connectivity into Edmonton on the weekends, and I think that would begin to scratch that itch," said Lars Hansen, Mayor of Leduc. "There are a lot of different options here -- just because we only pick one doesn't mean it's a no to all of them. There's an opportunity to look at others down the line as well."

Leduc staff will also bring forward options to improve service for LATS at their Nov. 2, 2026, budget presentation.
