The Edmonton International Airport will be hosting its annual public meeting on Thursday, May 7.

Attendees at the free event will hear from YEG Board Chair Carman McNary as well as President and CEO Myron Keehn, who will discuss various topics, including the airport's top priorities for this year, recent achievements, and their five-year plan.

"We're going to talk about a lot of the large programs running at the airport, and what that means for our region," said Keehn. "It's a pretty transformational time at the airport, hydrogen being one of those key elements, to help use de-carbonize but also drive the future of logistics and transportation."

Keehn was one of the speakers at the recent Canadian Hydrogen Convention that took place between Apr. 20-21 in Edmonton. He says the event brought together local, national, and international stakeholders to discuss the role hydrogen will play in the national economy and various aspects of daily life. He adds that the Edmonton metropolitan region is expected to play a key role in this area.

"We're pretty unique in the fact that if Edmonton were its own country, we'd be the second biggest hydrogen producer in the world besides the United States," said Keehn. "That gives you a sense of how much hydrogen is produced here today because of our petrochemical and refining industry."

YEG has already begun implementing hydrogen-based vehicles at the airport, which include the new runway sweeper that was put into service last year. Other hydrogen-powered vehicles in use include transportation carts that operate between terminal gates.

This year's annual public meeting will take place at the Timms Centre for the Arts in Edmonton on May 7. Doors will be open starting at 4:00 p.m. as attendees will be welcomed into the theatre lobby by YEG's own volunteer ambassadors and YEG Stage live music.
