Wabamun Lake's 2025 LakeWatch results unveiled

PARKLAND COUNTY---- Wabamun Lake's 2025 LakeWatch results have been released.

The lake was monitored by the Alberta Lake Management Society's LakeWatch program last year to gather water quality data. 

Results indicated that the water quality was good and nutrient levels were moderate. Algae and cyanobacteria biomass in the water was low to moderate and measured metals did not exceed guideline values. Microcystin toxin levels remained below the recreational guideline and the lake remained well oxygenated for aquatic life.

It was also indicated in the report that the lake has become clearer and less nutrient rich since 1983 due to decreases in phosphorus and algae.

However, an increase was noted in total dissolved liquids and the lake's water levels last year were found to be near the lower end of the historical range. 

According to Wabamun Watershed Management Council, continued monitoring is essential for understanding how changes may affect water chemistry, shoreline habitat, recreation, and the overall health of the lake.
