OTTAWA -- Parkland MP Dane Lloyd is calling on government to rein in its federal spending.
Rising in the House of Commons on Oct. 30, 2026, Lloyd took aim at Prime Minister Mark Carney's fiscal impact since forming government in April of last year. Carney's first budget, tabled in November 2025, set out $586 billion in projected federal spending for the fiscal year. This represented a significant expansion in federal outlays compared to previous administrations, and included an estimated $78.3 billion deficit for 2025–26. Lloyd says this has driven up the cost of living for those Canadians who are already struggling.
"With rising inflation and interest rates, they will now have to pay more for their mortgage, car payments and line of credit," said Lloyd. "Every single dollar that the Liberal government borrows makes every dollar that Canadians have to borrow more expensive. When will the Prime Minister finally get his spending under control so that Canadians can afford to pay their bills?"
Mark Carney has previously defended his government's historic spending by framing it "generational investments". He has also argued that spending on national projects is required to decouple from volatile foreign dependencies, and that targeted investments in infrastructure, skilled trades training, and technological innovation will generate long-term GDP growth that will outpace borrowing costs.
"The cost of fuel, food and homes keeps rising. Families are already going further into debt each month just to make ends meet, and now they have to pay higher interest," said Lloyd. "We know that inflation and interest are rising due to the Liberal government's massive deficit spending."
Ryan Turnbull, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, responded by saying that the federal government continues to work to leverage Canada's fiscal strength to invest in jobs for the future, wages that outpace inflation, and higher productivity.
