SPRUCE GROVE -- The City of Spruce Grove is crafting a management plan for the East Pioneer Natural Area.
The goal of the plan is to provide the municipality with a detailed overview and inventory of the area while establishing goals and objectives for the ongoing management and preservation of the 45-hectare natural resource. The East Pioneer Natural Area is located east of Spruce Grove and is mainly comprised of fens, wetlands, uplands, and swamps.
"This is a significant area," said Mayor Jeff Acker. "Great objectives, good long-term and short-term considerations, for how we move forward to protect this environmentally sensitive area. I think it's a huge opportunity for our community. I really appreciate previous councils, and this council, continuing to invest and ensure we're continuing to protect those areas."
Spruce Grove Council originally directed its administration to prepare a Natural Area Management Plan (NAMP) for the East Pioneer area back in 2023, which included a survey of the area. As part of this work, a consultation team conducted field recognizance work to properly assess the area, and found several species of plants that can be considered rare and which bring added interest to the area.
This eventually led to the plan's draft, which states the main objective to protect the biodiversity, ecological integrity, and ecosystem functions of the Natural Area. This included a particular emphasis on maintaining site hydrology and sensitive fen communities, while providing opportunities for low-impact, nature-based recreational activities to the residents of Spruce Grove.
The next phase will involve a review of the identified management tasks and delegation of responsibilities to the appropriate department.
