STONY PLAIN---- The Town of Stony Plain has announced that residents can now apply for urban beekeeping and hen keeping licenses.
The licenses are permitted under the non domestic animal bylaw which was approved by council last summer. The bylaw sets clear standards for training, mentorship, animal care and community impact to support small scale urban agriculture.
Commitment to environmental responsibility is a key aspect of the town's 2025-2028 strategic plan.
"Urban agriculture isn't just about food; it's about growing community. Keeping bees and hens helps create a healthier, more connected community by sharing knowledge, and supporting each other through sustainable practices, " said Mayor William Choy.
Prospective keepers will need to complete relevant training and work alongside an experienced mentor for a minimum of one year. Applicants are also required to notify their neighbors before setting up coops or hives.
