PARKLAND COUNTY -- Parkland RCMP are urging motorists to prioritize safe driving in an effort to curb traffic concerns along one of the county's most troubled highways.
Since August 2025, the detachment says they've responded to a total of 19 vehicle collisions along Highway 627. Of these, 14 resulted in non-fatal injuries, while 4 resulted in fatalities. Another incident saw a pedestrian injured due to a hit-and-run collision. The latest incident came on Aug. 13, 2026, when a 69-year-old was killed when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck.
In light of the recent problems along the highway, the Parkland RCMP are reminding motorists that responsible choices behind the wheel can mean the difference between arriving safely and a tragic outcome. Media Liaison Theresa Martins asks drivers to prioritize safety by avoiding impaired driving, driving to conditions, and avoiding all distractions while traveling on Alberta roads.
"Distracted driving is not limited to texting or talking on a handheld device," said Martins. "It also includes personal grooming, reading, writing, adjusting GPS or audio devices, attending to passengers or pets, or any other activity that might impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely."
She also advises motorists to ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing their seat belt before driving, to be mindful of cyclists, pedestrians, and motorcyclists, and to always be alert at intersections. "Every trip is an opportunity to make the right choices behind the wheel," said Inspector Kevin McGillivray of the Parkland RCMP. "We all have a part in road safety. Please do your part by being courteous, and by exercising patience."
It's noted that the detachment plans to introduce new road safety initiatives in the coming months while boosting traffic enforcement.
