ENOCH -- Alberta's police watchdog has released its report into a fatal incident that occurred on June 24, 2025.
Parkland RCMP first became aware of the situation after getting a call shortly after 7:00 p.m. that a male was experiencing a serious mental health crisis in one of the rooms of the River Cree Casino. Two witnesses, who were located in the suite directly below the individual, had also reported that they heard yelling and observed blood-covered furniture and glass falling onto the terrace outside their balcony windows.
The subject officer had attempted to enter the room along with another officer, but was unsuccessful. The initial officer then went outside to a rooftop structure and observed the male sitting on the ledge of the shattered third-storey window of his room. The male then jumped from the ledge while holding an ironing board and a shard of glass. He landed on the terrace outside a second-storey room, immediately stood up, and began to strike and break the window of that room.
Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team states in their report that the subject officer commanded the male to cease his attempts to break the window, and that if he didn't, a conductive energy weapon would be used to subdue him. When the male continued to strike the window, the officer discharged his taser.
After being restrained, the male stopped screaming and became relatively motionless on the rooftop. Before EMS arrived, officers determined that the male was unresponsive and began life-saving measures. EMS continued those efforts before transporting the individual to hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
In their ruling, ASIRT cleared the subject officer of any wrongdoing, saying that his use of force was proportionate, necessary, and reasonable. As a result, they stated that there are no reasonable grounds to believe that an offence was committed.
