STONY PLAIN -- Stony Plain continues to grapple with wastewater capacity issues due to recent heavy rainfall.

In an alert issued on the evening of Sunday, June 21, the municipality asked residents and businesses to immediately reduce all non-essential water use to help reduce pressure on the wastewater system and lower the risk of additional sewer backups and localized flooding. They ask residents to hold off on laundry and dishwashing, take short showers and limit baths, avoid flushing toilets, refrain from running the water while brushing your teeth or shaving, and to eliminate any other non-essential water use.

"The Alberta Emergency Alert was issued to ensure residents and businesses are aware of the situation and the immediate actions needed to help reduce pressure on our wastewater system," said Paul Simons, Manager of Civic and Municipal Operations. "We are asking everyone to reduce non-essential water use wherever possible. By working together, we can help reduce the risk of additional sewer backups and localized flooding."

While there are currently no reports of widespread flooding, reducing water use will help lessen pressure on the wastewater system and reduce the risk of additional impacts. In addition, residents are advised to stay away from creeks, stormwater ponds, and other areas affected by high water levels.

As of Monday, June 22, all roads, sidewalks, and pathways in Stony Plain remain open. The township says that they will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Meantime, a flood alert is also in effect for the Hamlet of Wabamun. This comes as the hamlet has received reports of sewer backups affecting individual homes and businesses. Continued excessive water use may increase the risk of additional sewer backups and flooding.
