Town of Devon explores options for Esso Oil building

DEVON -- The Town of Devon continues to mull the future of the Esso Imperial Oil building.

According to the municipality, finding a purpose for the building has remained a challenge since its purchase back in 2016. However, following a study conducted by a council-appointed task force, the township is now considering retrofitting the building into a new Town Hall.

The recommendations were brought to Council following several months of site tours, technical reviews, and interviews with staff. The community task force -- which is comprised of a group of local volunteers with expertise in construction, infrastructure, and safety -- advises that turning the building into a Town Hall would be the best path forward. They note that the facility could also include spaces for local community groups. 

The task force has recommended a phased plan to update the building, which would include fixing the roof to ensure the building is weather-tight, upgrading the heating system for better efficiency, and improving the building's overall accessibility. They say that the Town could apply for funding programs to help offset costs, especially for energy-saving upgrades like new windows, improved insulation, and energy-efficient lighting.

The Town says that if Council chooses to proceed, a combination of funding sources could be used to support the project. This would include provincial and federal grants, municipal reserves, phased budgeting, and long-term borrowing. They add that the availability of external funding will play a major role in shaping how and when upgrades could move forward.

Devon administration says Council will now review the task force's recommendations before deciding how to move forward.
