STONY PLAIN -- A new mural has been unveiled on the west side of the Stony Plain Youth Centre.

The latest addition to the Town of Stony Plain's public art collection is entitled "Our Hands, Our Home", and features a landscape of Stony Plain with landmark buildings and an overarching Indigenous perspective balancing the seven sacred footprints, a central medicine wheel, and youth handprints. The new mural was created by artist Jada Hatfield and was commissioned through Stony Plain's Art in Public Places Program.

"Creating a mural at the Stony Plain Youth Centre has allowed me to bring together everything I value," said Hatfield. "Cultural storytelling, youth empowerment, and art that breathes life into shared spaces helping bring connection into a space where young people can gather, learn, and grow."

According to the Town of Stony Plain, Hatfield has completed various projects throughout Alberta that uplift Indigenous voices, culture, and experiences. The mural pays homage to the former "Project of the Heart" mural that was originally commissioned in 2013 and offered youth the opportunity to seek a better understanding and relationship with Indigenous peoples. However, due to irrepairable damage, the piece was decommissioned last year.

"When we bring together diverse perspectives, cultures, and voices, we strengthen our shared understanding and build a more connected community," said Mayor William Choy. "Our Hands, Our Home will proudly represent diverse voices and cultures in Stony Plain, while serving as an enduring reminder of our commitment to reconciliation and lifelong learning."

Hatfield's previous work includes being selected as a featured artist for the 2025 Youth Teepee Summit, creating the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) Orange Shirt design, and completing a commission for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
