Stony Plain cadets honoured with 'Freedom of the Town'

STONY PLAIN -- Stony Plain has bestowed the 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps with one of the town's highest civic honours.

In a recent proclamation, the Town of Stony Plain granted the youth development program the 'Freedom of the Town' amid the organization's 40th anniversary. This recognition dates back to medieval Europe when a "freeman" was a citizen of means who was free from serfdom. Today, the title is a ceremonial recognition and is similar in concept to receiving a symbolic "key to the city".

"The 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps has been dedicated to public service and leadership in our community for 40 years," said Mayor William Choy. "We are proud to bestow this great honour on the group, and look forward to continuing our strong relationship with the Sea Cadets for many years to come."

The 299 Mackenzie Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps consists of members aged 12-18 who meet weekly in Stony Plain. Over its four decades serving the community, the corps has focused on building leadership skills, confidence, and teamwork while gaining concrete skills in sailing, marksmanship, and drill commands.

The proclamation signed by Mayor Choy on Sept. 27, 2026, recognizes the officers, instructors, volunteers, sponsoring committee members, parents, alumni, and cadets have collectively contributed thousands of hours in service to the benefit of Stony Plain and its residents.
