SPRUCE GROVE----With phase 1 of Spruce Grove's boundary road project complete, next spring will see construction resume from Holy Trinity Church and all the way down to Highway 16A.
The project has been in the works for approximately 15 years. Since the road is located on the boundary of Stony Plain, the city of Spruce Grove collaborated with them for the project. Over the last 4 years, Spruce Grove was able to initiate the annexation of the road with the help of Stony Plain, which allowed them to move forward on the project. The project includes Grove Drive, the main connector throughout east and west of Spruce Grove, ending with two schools on the far west side with no exit. This caused a backup of traffic along Grove Drive and strain on Jennifer Heil Way. The project came into existence with the city's priority to get the road opened up.
Now, phase one of the project has been completed.
"I think we're gonna see a lot of happy residents now that now have an alternative to be able to come and go from their neighborhood. I think it's gonna alleviate a lot of congestion at the Grove Drive -Jennifer Heil intersection and I think it just opens up all those lands on the west side of Spruce Grove for further development, " said Mayor Jeff Acker, talking about the impact of the project on the residents.
Phase 2 of the project will see the traffic circle on the north side of boundary road connect all the way to Highway 16A.It will include the increasing of turning lanes on highway 16A and boundary road, making it more safer and efficient, along with two additional traffic circles and the construction of a two lane road.
Phase 2 is expected to last up until November 2026 along with a road closure.
"I'm really thankful for the town of Stony Plain for working with us to get that annexation move forward and I'm really excited to see the completion of this work, " said Mayor Acker.
