Parkland County celebrates its first FireSmart Canada Recognized neighbourhood

 A special celebration will be held for the community of Century Gates, the first FireSmart Canada Recognized neighbourhood in Parkland County.  This is a national program to officially recognize places that have taken critical steps to reduce their vulnerability to wildland fires. The focus is bringing neighbours together to address threats on their respective properties, and those in common areas within the community.  

“It started with the Parkland County fire department coming out and doing home assessments and then developing it into an Emergency Response Plan for our community in the case of a wildfire,” said Charlene Herbert, a Century Gates resident involved with the initiative. “The FireSmart journey has brought out the best in community spirit, we are now more than just ourselves.”

Parkland County has become a Provincial Leader in Wildfire Mitigation with the number of FireSmartHome Assessments increasing by 127% in 2024 over the previous year. To build on this momentum and celebrate the hard work of residents who have made the effort to keep their community safe, our Fire Services team alongside Mayor and Council will be unveiling a sign for the Century Gates neighbourhood in recognition of their achievement. 

 The program of events is as follows: 

 Date: Saturday, May 3, 2025  

Location: 53522 Range Road 272, Parkland County, AB   

Event Schedule: 

• 12:00 PM – Opening comments from Parkland County Representatives  
• 12:30 PM – Unveiling of road sign

• 1:00–2:00 PM – FireSmart Booth – Century Gates residents will have the opportunity to gather information, meet the Parkland County FireSmart crew, and engage with attending council members.
