Stony Plain, AB

Recycling in Stony Plain is expanding to accept more materials. Residents will now be able to recycle additional plastic and container materials as a result of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility program.

Effective immediately, blue bags can now include:

  • Plastic clamshell containers
  • Individual yogurt containers
  • Molded plastic egg cartons
  • Tetra packs
  • Plastic takeout containers (no Styrofoam)

All items must be clean, dry, and empty before disposal. Glass, shredded paper, plastic bags, batteries, and Styrofoam are still not accepted in blue bags.

On April 1, 2025, Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program came into effect, shifting the responsibility for recycling from municipalities to the producers of packaging and products. Stony Plain has chosen the Opt-In model, meaning the Town will continue to manage residential recycling through contracted providers while receiving monthly rebates based on the number of serviced households.

“Our community continues to benefit from a growing range of options for managing waste responsibly,” says Mayor William Choy. “Whether you live in a single-family home or a multi-family complex, there are accessible solutions for recycling, organics, and more.”

Don’t Just Trash It! The Rotary Recycle Centre is open 24/7 and accepts blue bags, cardboard, organics, electronics, paint, batteries, and many other items.

Residents living in multi-family complexes like apartments or townhomes, are encouraged to use the Rotary Recycle Centre to drop off blue bag recyclables and organic materials such as food waste, soiled paper (pizza boxes, coffee filters, napkins), plants and grass clippings, shredded paper, etc.

“With the addition of new items to blue bag recycling as a result of the EPR program, and the continued availability of the Rotary Recycle Centre, residents now have more ways than ever to divert waste from the landfill,” says Doug Fraser, Supervisor of Utilities and Environment.
