Stony Plain
The Town of Stony Plain is excited host another season of urban agriculture education and engagement through the Microhabitat Small Scale Urban Garden events. Now in its third year, the event series continues to inspire residents to connect with nature and grow their knowledge of sustainable food systems. As part of the Town’s ongoing commitment to community wellness and environmental sustainability, two educational workshops will be hosted in 2025, focusing on ecological gardening practices and the importance of pollinators in urban environments.
The first workshop, Maintenance and Harvesting of an Ecological Garden, will be held virtually on June 26 from 5 PM to 6 PM. No registration is required, and residents can join the webinar using a link that will be shared closer to the date of the event. This informative session will guide participants through best practices for maintaining a thriving vegetable garden, including watering, fertilizing, harvesting, and ecological care methods that respect both people and the planet.
The second workshop, Pollinators and Urban Farming, will take place in person on September 4 from 12 PM to 1 PM at the Stony Plain Golf Course. This session will explore the critical role pollinators play in plant reproduction and food security. Participants will gain insight into pollination basics, pollinator-friendly plants, current threats to pollinators, and actionable steps they can take to support pollinator populations in their own gardens.
“I’m always proud when we can create opportunities for residents to learn something new,” says Mayor William Choy. “Whether you’ve been gardening for years, or this is your first season, we can all learn something. These workshops are a great way to grow not only skills, but community too.”
“These workshops equip residents with practical skills that support sustainable living and building a stronger, healthier community,” says Evan Joyes, Sustainability Planner. “We’re excited to continue offering opportunities that connect residents to their environment and promote long-term food security in Stony Plain.”
In line with the goals of the Town’s Urban Agriculture Plan, produce from the urban garden will be donated to the Parkland Food Bank. For more information and to access upcoming workshop details, including the link to the virtual workshop, visit the Urban Agriculture webpage.
