Stony Plain, AB
The Town of Stony Plain proudly celebrated the 40-year anniversary of its sister town relationship with Shikaoi, Japan, this past Saturday. A commemorative banquet was held at Heritage Park and honoured four decades of friendship, cultural exchange, and shared values between the two communities.
Since forming a sister town relationship in 1985, Shikaoi and Stony Plain have built a rich and enduring connection. The relationship has been strengthened through the Shikaoi Exchange Program, which offers a variety of exchange opportunities including the Student Exchange, Adult Exchange, Long Stay Volunteer, Host Family, and Assistant Language Teacher programs. To date, more than 2000 students have taken part in student exchange visits, helping to broaden perspectives and deepen meaningful relationships.
“It’s such an honour to be part of this impactful relationship with Shikaoi,” says Mayor William Choy. “Over the past four decades, we’ve built meaningful relationships, welcomed visitors into our homes and hearts, and watched friendships develop through shared experiences. I’m thrilled to celebrate this important milestone, and I look forward to the next 40 years of friendship—and beyond!”
“Being part of the Shikaoi Exchange Program for so many years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career,” says Kelly Maluta, Facility Programming Coordinator. “Hosting the 40-Year Anniversary Banquet in Stony Plain was a special opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the impact of our longstanding relationship.”
