Suspects charged following firearms incident in Maskwacis

MASKWACIS -- Charges have been laid following a recent firearms incident in Maskwacis.

The incident took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 6, 2026, at a residence on the Louis Bull First Nation. RCMP say they responded to the scene after receiving a call that two men had entered the home and threatened its occupant while armed with a firearm.

"The victim reported that two male suspects had entered the residence with a firearm and were threatening to shoot their son," said Cst. Catlin Chaisson with the Maskwacis RCMP detachment.

He notes that the two suspects were initially able to evade police and flee the area on foot. However, an investigation was launched which led police to a nearby residence, where both male suspects were located and arrested without further incident.

Charges have now been laid in connection with the incident against Maskwacis residents 23-year-old Jonathan Soosay and a 17-year-old male youth. Both were charged with the following:

• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm

Following a Judicial Interim Release hearing, Soosay was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin on Sept. 1, 2026. The 17-year-old youth was taken before a Justice of the Peace and was released from custody with conditions. The youth is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin on Sept. 2, 2026.
