PONOKA -- Details about another residential break-in have been included in the Ponoka RCMP's latest crime report.

The report covers the period between Apr. 23 and May 27 and notes that on May 9, 2026, a male suspect trespassed into a local residence and chased the homeowner outside with a knife. The homeowner was not harmed in the incident, and the suspect was arrested and charged shortly after.

The suspect, a 42-year-old resident of Red Deer, was charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.  Ponoka RCMP did not release the name of the suspect and say he was released from custody with a future court date.

Also on May 9, police say that two "highly intoxicated males" were reported to be assaulting each other outside of a business in town. RCMP members attended the scene and located one of the males unconscious. When the unconscious male woke up, he and the other male suspect refused any police involvement in the situation.

A little over a week later, on May 17, Ponoka RCMP responded to a report of a break-and-enter that occurred at an apartment in Ponoka where various items were stolen. The RCMP's forensic identification section attended and assisted with gathering evidence.

Through the investigation, it was learned that a suspect had pawned some of the stolen items. As a result, a 24-year-old Ponoka resident was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000 and trafficking stolen property under $5,000.

Earlier in the month, on May 5, a complainant reported a male in Ponoka County who had a firearm hidden in his home and did not have a firearms license. RCMP executed a search warrant the following day, recovering a shotgun. The 29-year-old suspect was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, tampering with a serial number of a firearm, and unsafe storage of a firearm.

During the full reporting period, Ponoka RCMP responded to 586 calls for service. Officers issued 52 violation tickets and 18 warnings for traffic infractions. One immediate roadside sanction was issued for impaired driving.  Officers also conducted 69 curfew compliance checks on 9 subjects, resulting in four breach charges.
