PONOKA -- A new report examining crime and disorder in downtown Ponoka will be made public next month.
This comes as administrative work on the long-awaited report has been underway for the last several months. The report will explore the issues of crime and social disorder in the downtown area by reviewing root causes and evaluating options. A summary of the findings, along with options and recommendations to reduce unwanted activity and boost public safety, is scheduled to be presented to Ponoka Council in August.
"Administration has compiled and analyzed multi-year statistical data for areas within the downtown, including both criminal and non-criminal occurrences," reads a report from Tim Schmidt, General Manager of Planning and Infrastructure with the Town of Ponoka. "In addition, a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Audit has been completed."
A CPTED audit assesses how the design, layout, and maintenance of public and private spaces can influence safety and criminal activity. The audit identifies environmental factors that may contribute to crime, vandalism, disorder, or perceptions of insecurity and recommends improvements to enhance safety and encourage positive use of the area.
Typical areas of review include lighting, sightlines, landscaping, access points, building design, public spaces, and overall site maintenance. Schmidt says that the objective is to create a safer, more welcoming environment by reducing opportunities for unwanted activity and improving natural surveillance and user comfort.
