Stony Plain celebrates renewed Meridian Reservoir Park

STONY PLAIN -- The Town of Stony Plain recently celebrated the reopening of Meridian Reservoir Park.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the improved green space -- located in the heart of Meridian Heights -- was held in late August by Mayor William Choy, along with members of Stony Plain Council. This marked the completion of months of construction to revamp the park and add various new amenities for the public. Brett Newstead, GM of Planning and Infrastructure, says that a lot of work went into making the renewed park a reality. 

"We ended up getting really creative through the planning process," said Newstead. "We worked with a really strong landscape architect who brought a lot of really good energy and information for us, and we ended up with a couple really cool features, including the basketball court -- which has a unique basketball pad with some art on it." 

Newstead says the project was born out of the recent infrastructure rehab of the Meridian Reservoir. This included a substantial number of improvements to the reservoir facility, which led to necessary changes in the area.

"As we went through the process and we had some dialogue with Council, a priority for them during this project was to make sure that there was still the availability of a park space, a pocket park, for those who live in the community," said Newstead.

The renewed green space contains a playground, basketball court, and grassy area. The pocket park replaces the multisport courts that were relocated from Meridian Heights to the green space south of the Stony Plain Outdoor Pool. The new tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts opened in June of 2026.

Newstead adds that the construction of the new basketball court, like many projects across the region, was challenged by the record-rainfall experienced throughout central Alberta during June. For this particular construction, at least five days of sun are required for installation work to be completed.

"It was important to Council to invest in our active outdoor spaces for residents to gather," says Mayor Choy. "We hope this park will be a great spot for neighbours to spend time outside together."

The Meridian Heights Reservoir Pocket Park is located at 4501 43rd Avenue.
