PARKLAND COUNTY---- Various updates were shared during Parkland School Division's board meeting this week.
A presentation on Woodhaven's Engagement Hub was delivered during the meeting. The Engagement Hub is described as a proactive, restorative alternative to traditional out of school suspension. The program aims to keep kids at school even when they have code of conduct offenses. Students are provided a low stimulation environment within the school's Learning Commons.
"While I'm in the hub, my goal for the students is to help support the students in building confidence, taking ownership of what they did, and to feel connected back to the school community again," said Joanne Furminger, Woodhaven Engagement Hub EA.
The board also reviewed the division's Three Year Capital Plan.
Year 1 (2026-2027) prioritizes a new K-9 school on the west side of Spruce Grove at a cost of $32 million dollars and the modernization or replacement of Brookwood school at a cost of $18-28 million dollars.
"Priorities should remain as consistent as possible to demonstrate a firm need for the projects and to allow the Government of Alberta and our partners to systemically prepare and plan for these requests, " said Serge LaBrie, Director of Facilities Services.
The Board of Trustees also recognized James MacPhail of Forest Green School, Tiffany Caffyn of Ecole Meridian Heights School and Spencer Gilchrist of Westview School as the division's Edwin Parr Teacher Award nominees. Each year, six outstanding first year teachers are honored by the Alberta School Boards Association with the award. Nominees are selected based on their School Board Evaluations using the Teacher Quality Standards competencies.
