Progress continues on new major pickleball facility

STONY PLAIN -- Construction continues to progress on a new multi-court pickleball facility in Stony Plain.

The massive facility is slated to become the largest pickleball centre in Canada and will be located in Stony Plain's North Business Park. Ground was broken on the project during the summer of 2025 after funding was secured by local municipalities and the province. Once complete, the new facility will feature a staggering 28-outdoor courts along with 14 indoor courts.

While this summer's wet weather caused some delays, work is now progressing at a solid pace. Garand Jones, President of the Parkland Pickleheads, says that the outdoor courts are expected to be completed by the end of September, while the indoor portion of the facility should be ready to go sometime early next year.

"We're working on the west section right now, and we'll be painting the court surfaces shortly. Then we'll be moving to the east section probably between the next week to ten days," said Garand. "It's been an involved project, I'd say there's obviously been some challenges caused by the weather." 

The Parkland Pickleheads have been working towards bringing a new pickleball facility to the area since 2019, as extensive planning was undertaken prior to the official ground-breaking ceremony held in July 2025. The first coat of asphalt was laid during the fall, and during an update provided to 88.1 The One, the organization confirmed that all of the fencing for the outdoor courts had been nearly completed. 

"It's exciting. We're looking forward to holding some major events there," said Garand. "Attracting players from all over the country, and even some of the northern U.S. states. We look forward to seeing people out there playing, and hopefully we'll get to play some there this fall before we get back into winter." 

The new pickleball facility is expected to be a significant benefit to all regional pickleball players and will also support local businesses by driving event tourism with local, provincial, and national stream tournaments.
