PARKLAND COUNTY -- One person has died following a fatal vehicle collision in Parkland County.

Parkland RCMP say the crash occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 4, between a southbound semi-truck and a northbound pickup truck near Township Road 524 and Highway 770. Media Liaison Theresa Martins says that the resulting head-on collision resulted in both vehicles catching fire.

The 62-year-old male driver of the semi-truck was able to exit his vehicle, was assessed at the scene, and transported to hospital," said Martins. "As the investigation continued, it was confirmed that the pickup truck had a sole occupant, who was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Martins adds that police are currently unable to provide any additional information on the deceased as the matter remains under investigation.

Stony Plain Fire and Parkland Fire both responded to the collision, while Parkland County Enforcement Services and LEDCOR assisted with traffic detours. The RCMP's Real Time Operations Centre in Edmonton was engaged, and a collision analyst remained on scene for several hours to begin the investigation. So far, no information has been released as to what caused the collision.
