STONY PLAIN -- The Town of Stony Plain says its new recreation centre is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
The township's former Council approved the major project back in April 2024, with construction commencing in November of that same year. The dry sport recreation and six-sheet curling facility was approved with a construction budget of $41,651,871.
According to Stony Plain staff, the project is proceeding on schedule and on budget to date. 47 per cent of the overall project has been completed, and in the coming months, more structural completion will be noticeable on the site.
Karl Hill, General Manager of Community Services, spoke this week about some of the major work completed in 2025.
"The utilities, servicing the site took a lot of work to get the water and sewer connected," said Hill. "Also, we just had our gas utility installed late last year."
He says that 2025 began with site preparation work, followed by the completion of the parking lot base and entrance, parking lot lighting, and interior block walls. In addition, crews also completed various other mechanical installations.
In the next few months, pre-engineered building installation is slated for completion, along with floor slab preparation and interior work. Karl Hill adds that the new curling club is set to be constructed this coming fall.
"We are proposing the curling club this year -- having the curling ice in, and having the curling club be prepared for their season to start, with a full opening of the building to the public in Q4 2026," said Hill.
Stony Plain staff also note that they submitted a Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program grant for $6,000,000 on Oct. 16, 2024. As of this time, they have not received any formal communications about the success of that grant.
