STONY PLAIN -- The Town of Stony Plain is projected to reach a population of 19,773 by 2029.
This is according to population projections prepared by Applications Management for the Tri-Regional Municipal Plan. The data shows that while Stony Plain has seen a modest population growth since 2019, the total number of people who call the township home is expected to increase by 2.6 per cent annually over the next three years. Stronger growth is also anticipated in the 2030's, as the population for the Town of Stony Plain is expected to reach 24,304 by 2039.
It's noted in Stony Plain's latest housing strategy update that the municipality already exceeded the number of residents it was estimated to grow to in 2024, indicating the Town is growing faster than anticipated. Furthermore, because the baseline population used to inform the anticipated population was less than the population identified through the 2019 Municipal Census, it is likely that anticipated housing needs are under-representative of expected housing needs.

The total number of households in Stony Plain is expected to grow by 14.1 per cent -- or 1,074 households -- between 2024 and 2029, and another 1,983 households are projected to be added by 2039. The township estimates that they will need a total of 1,330 new homes to be built by 2029 in order to meet the demand of the growing population.
This could include 490 new family housing units, 825 seniors housing units, and 165 units for indigenous households. The Town's housing strategy states that there is currently an unmet need for supportive housing units, including 62 units for adults with mental health challenges, 14 units for adults with mobility issues, and 27 for adults with intellectual disabilities.
