SPRUCE GROVE -- The Rooftop Campout hosted by the Spruce Grove Firefighters will get underway on Feb. 20.
The annual initiative aims to raise awareness and funds for individuals and families affected by muscular dystrophy. It will take place starting at 10 a.m. at the fire hall located at the corner of 5 Avenue and Kings Street and will last throughout the weekend. Erin Collins with the Spruce Grove Firefighters Association discussed the event in conversation with 88.1 morning host Shane Michaels.
"All weekend long people can stop by the fire hall just off Kings Street across from the library," said Collins. "We're going to be camping facing Kings Street, so even if you drive by and honk we would love that, but if you want to stop and donate, or get a peek at the fire trucks, we would love to show you that too."
Even with overnight temperatures expected to be in the minus 20's this weekend, the local firefighters won't be deterred in their efforts to raise funds for those suffering from muscular dystrophy. Collins notes that the muscle stiffness caused by the frigid cold will give them a brief indication of what people with the debilitating disease go through every day, and adds that they're determined to build on last year's success.
"Last year we raised just over $13,000, and the weather was pretty nice," said Collins. "Maybe if people are finding themselves to be charitable in the extra cold weather, we'll be able to top last year's summation."
Muscular dystrophy is a group of over 30 genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles. Primarily affecting children, it causes increasing muscle wasting and walking difficulties, often leading to heart or breathing issues. While no cure exists, treatments like steroids, physical therapy, and assistive devices manage symptoms and slow progression.
The Rooftop Campout will wrap up on the morning of Monday, Feb. 23.
