STONY PLAIN -- Alberta's Electoral Boundaries Commission has submitted its recommendations to the Legislative Assembly.
Under the proposed changes, the current provincial riding of Spruce Grove-Stony Plain would be broken up into separate constituencies. If the changes are approved this spring, Stony Plain would join Drayton Valley to form the new riding of "Stony Plain-Drayton Valley." In its final report issued Mar. 26, 2026, the commission said the new electoral division bears similarity to the present Drayton Valley-Devon, with several changes.
"It is recommended that the Town of Stony Plain be moved into the electoral division from Spruce Grove-Stony Plain," said the commission. "Spruce Grove and areas immediately surrounding it warrant an electoral division of their own. Though the relationship between Stony Plain and Drayton Valley is not obvious, in the given circumstances, this division will yield effective representation for Alberta."
The report goes on to say that the proposed electoral division of "Stony Plain-Drayton Valley" brings together Brazeau County, most of Parkland County, and the towns of Stony Plain and Drayton Valley. They insist that effective representation will continue. Meantime, Spruce Grove is set to become its very own riding if the changes are approved in the Alberta legislature.

"This electoral division concentrates on the City of Spruce Grove, all of which is contained herein. It also contains areas of Parkland County east of Range Road 275 and north of Highway 627, as well as those areas east of Highway 43 and north of Yellowhead Highway," said the commission. "In sum, this electoral division reflects the interests of a small city and neighbouring areas in the bordering county. The current MLA for Spruce Grove-Stony Plain, acknowledged the current boundaries necessitated dividing Spruce Grove and Stony Plain. He also expressed contentment with the interim boundaries, from which these final boundaries only moderately deviate."
The boundaries commission also recommends that Enoch Cree Nation and areas of Parkland County south of Enoch Cree Nation, east of Highway 60, and north of the North Saskatchewan River be moved into the new electoral division of Edmonton-Enoch.
These electoral boundary changes will not become official until being fully adopted in the Alberta legislature.
