Work to begin on largest commercial build in history of Calmar

CALMAR -- Work is set to begin on the largest commercial build in Calmar's history. 

The first phase of the new "Calmar Crossing" project will get underway this summer and will consist of a 33,000 square foot commercial plaza, located on 5225 50 Avenue. It will be anchored by Shell and a global fast-food chain, and according to the township, will also house several internationally renowned and popular food brands. Future phases will introduce opportunities for additional retail, medical, lifestyle, and family-focused services.

On July 15, Calmar Deputy Mayor Jamie McKeag-Reber and Councillor Sean Carnahan joined Calmar Crossing Inc. co-principals Rakesh Patel and Mahmood Shah, project investors, and special guests for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on the first phase. The Town of Calmar's current largest commercial development was constructed in the 1970's and is noted as only being a quarter of the size of the upcoming Calmar Crossing.

"The Calmar Crossing development is a prime example of how the Town is working to attract high-quality investment to strengthen our local economy and support job creation," said McKeag-Reber. "We are focused on capitalizing on our prime location along Highway 39 to expand local retail opportunities and set Calmar up for sustainable, long-term success."

Construction of the first two buildings within the new plaza (approximately 9,800 sq. ft. of retail space) will begin in late summer or early fall, with completion expected in July 2027, weather permitting. The most recent commercial development constructed in the last decade was the Calmar Medical Building, which was built on mainstreet back in 2018. The town says that it was a new build with all the updates of 2018, with the look of the 1930's to maintain the heritage look of Calmar's downtown district.

"Our goal is long-term, sustainable development that grows with the community. We also aim to create meaningful employment opportunities -- around a hundred new jobs -- by bringing top-tier facilities and services to Calmar."

Following the development of phase one, work will then get underway on the second phase -- which is expected to open the door for a new grocery store, medical services, and a pharmacy.
