Southfork Community Connections strengthens local impact

LEDUC -- Leduc's only neighbourhood association continues to strengthen its local impact. 

In an update provided this week, members of 'Southfork Community Connections' stood before City Council to discuss their recent successes, challenges, and future plans to boost the overall contribution of the organization to Southfork residents. The volunteer-based organization builds community connections through various local events and initiatives, including the recent "Parents Day in the Park" event. 

In Februrary, the association saw a significant turnover in its board, as Natasha Beirnes was named as the new Chair, taking over for Catherine Evely. Beirnes says that after significant growth and successful program delivery since inauguration, their organization is now entering a period of intentional strengthening and sustainability, with a focus on building community awareness.

"We've been really focusing the last couple months on our social media, making sure that we're letting everyone know what events are coming up," said Beirnes. "People want to become more involved when they know why we're doing what we're doing, and how it actually impacts people. I know for me, seeing the community come together makes my heart warm, because I think we need more of that."

Over the past several years, the organization has grown to include Southfork community gardens, advocacy for improved multi-way trail connections and active transportation, community cleanup initiatives, a new free little library, cooking classes, and a multitude of other community initiatives.

"Southfork is not simply a community where we live, work, and play; it is a community where people grow, connect, and thrive," said former Chair Catherine Evely. "Our greatest asset has always been our people; it has been an incredible journey to witness what can be accomplished when residents come together with a shared vision."

Some of their other priorities for this year include building local partnerships and growing their volunteer base for community events.
