Leduc's population surpasses 40,000 residents

LEDUC -- The City of Leduc eclipsed a population of 40,000 residents earlier this summer.

This comes as the municipality has continued to see a surge of new residents over the past several years. According to provincial data, Leduc grew by roughly 17.1 per cent over the last five-year tracking period -- positioning the city as one of the fastest-growing mid-sized cities in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. Over the past five years, Leduc's population has grown by roughly 6,000 people.

"Reaching 40,000 residents is an exciting milestone for Leduc and a reflection of the people who have helped build this community over generations," said Leduc Mayor Lars Hansen. "As we celebrate this moment, we also look forward with intention and optimism as we plan for a future that reflects the same community-minded values that Leduc has become known for."

While Hansen has said in the past that the city is pursuing growth in a responsible manner, concerns regarding pressure on local infrastructure have been brought forward by a number of residents. Despite the rapidly increasing population, the Black Gold School Division recently reported that it has seen a slowdown in enrollment growth for local schools. 

For the preliminary student count for the 2026-2027 school year, the BGSD grew by just 97 students over last year's total. This comes following another low growth year in 2025-2026, which saw the division expand by 0.73 per cent. This marks a significant decline in growth from the years 2022-2024, which saw a rapid uptake in new students. In 2024, the BGSD added 395 students, while 216 students were added in 2023.
