LEDUC -- A new Integrated Community Safety Unit has been launched in the City of Leduc.

The goal of the new unit is to boost safety by conducting regular foot and vehicle patrols in public spaces across the municipality. It has been launched in collaboration between RCMP, the City of Leduc, and Family and Community Support Services. Leduc RCMP Detachment Commander Kiel Samotej says the new unit will focus on increasing visibility, building relationships, and helping residents feel safe in public spaces.

"The overall goal of launching this new unit is to address some of the concerns that have been raised by our citizens," said Insp. Samotej. "One of the concerns was that they want to see more police visibility across our city -- they want to see police out and about interacting with our community members, and in some of the harder to reach places throughout our community."

In the Leduc RCMP's 2026 Policing Priorities Survey, 73 per cent of respondents said that more foot and vehicle patrols, stronger community presence, and increased enforcement would improve their confidence in local policing. Samotej says the new Integrated Community Safety Unit responds directly to this feedback by working with municipal and community partners.

"FCSS is supporting this program -- so, for example, if we come across some unhoused individuals who are struggling, we have the ability to call directly upon FCSS so they can provide them in real time that they need to assist," said Insp. Samotej.

FCSS Navigators will also support the team by helping connect individuals to appropriate services, resources, and community programs when needed, while Leduc's CPO will assist in other bylaw-related matters. Residents can expect to see the new unit active in parks, on trails, downtown, and in other high-traffic areas throughout the City of Leduc.

"People want to feel safe when they're out in our community, whether they’re enjoying our parks and recreation amenities or supporting local businesses," said Leduc Mayor Lars Hansen. "This integrated approach helps us address concerns while building positive connections across Leduc."
