Province to host town hall in Ponoka on AI development

PONOKA -- The province will be hosting a town hall in Ponoka next week to discuss the development of AI data centres.

The information session will give local residents a chance to ask questions and learn more about the various data centres proposed in Alberta, including the power, water, and community impacts of these controversial facilities. The town hall will be hosted by Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation, who insists that the province is ensuring that major private investments in AI data centres deliver substantial benefits for all Albertans. He adds that a website containing more details is also being launched.

"Albertans deserve real answers on what these new infrastructure investments mean for them," states Minister Glubish. "This website puts the facts about power, water, and community impact in one place, so people can see for themselves how Alberta is responsibly developing AI data centres on our own terms."

The province's town hall in Ponoka is slated to take place on Wednesday, August 19, from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. The exact location for the event has yet to be confirmed, and we'll have that information as soon as it's available. 

One of the unanswered questions heading into next week's town hall is if the province's future plans for AI data centres involve Ponoka County. The other two municipalities currently scheduled to have similar events, Grande Prairie and Strathcona County, both already have planned facilities in their regions. However, nothing has been confirmed for the Ponoka County region. We've reached out to the province's Ministry of Technology and Innovation, but have not yet received a response. 

Some of the concerns relating to AI data centres relate to environmental impacts and possible strains on the province's energy grid. Despite this, the province says its approach to data centre development differs from other jurisdictions and the safeguards that protect Alberta's electricity system, water resources, communities, and taxpayers. The largest currently proposed data centre is the $13-billion-dollar Meta facility being proposed for Strathcona County. 

Those who are unable to attend next week's town hall can also take part in a virtual town hall hosted on August 27. This online availability will feature both Minister Glubish as well as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
