MASKWACIS -- The Ermineskin Cree Nation is set to begin the process of electing its next Chief.
In the lead up to the vote, an official nomination meeting will be held on July 29 at Neywaskewyahk Okimaw Kamik (Ermineskin Community Hall) to give the Nation's members a chance to put forth names of candidates who seek to become Chief. To be eligible, candidates must submit an affidavit of residency, a criminal record check, and complete drug testing at the WYCO labs in Ponoka.
On August 3, the Ermineskin Cree Nation's administration will host an open forum to allow candidates for the position of Chief to speak directly to Nation membership, discuss why they should take on the role, and answer questions from the public. Election Day will be held two days following the forum on August 5, with polls opening starting at 9:00 a.m. and closing at 6:00 p.m.
"The time has come for members of Ermineskin Cree Nation to help shape the future of our Nation," reads a statement from the Nation. "Together, we can continue building a future that honours our traditions, supports our members, and strengthens our Nation for generations to come."
Joel Mykat is the current Chief of the Ermineskin Cree Nation. Elected in July 2023, Mykat leads the Nation's administration and governance while also advocating for indigenous treaty rights. The Nation is located within Maskwacis, approximately 20 km north of the Town of Ponoka.
