LEDUC -- Leduc RCMP say their Community Safety Plan has become a model across the province.
The plan was originally crafted in response to concerns expressed by the City of Leduc relating to an increase in unhoused people within the downtown core. This resulted in the RCMP's Senior Management Team designing a multi-faceted plan to address different identified objectives.
According to the Leduc RCMP, the Community Safety Plan consists of four main pillars. Qualitative and quantitative data collection, community engagement, upstream crime prevention, and access to wrap around services. Speaking to Leduc City Council, RCMP Inspector Kiel Samotej says other detachments across Alberta are now replicating Leduc's model.
"The City of Leduc's Community Safety Plan has been distributed to all the other detachments and communities in the province," said Inspector Samotej. "They're saying pay attention to what they're doing, because this is what we need."
The plan also includes a total of seventeen dedicated patrol shifts, which the Mounties say has resulted in positive contacts with community members and business owners. They add that it's also helped them identify individuals in need, as well as increase visibility, execute search warrants and seize drugs.
To continue their ongoing work, an RCMP Bike Patrol will also be coming to the downtown area this Summer.
