LEDUC -- A 34-year-old Leduc resident has been charged for intentionally ramming a police cruiser with his truck.
According to Leduc RCMP, the incident unfolded shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, 2025. Mounties say that a police vehicle was making patrols in the area of 50 Avenue and Grant MacEwan Boulevard when it was rammed from behind by the driver of an orange pickup truck. RCMP Corporal Troy Savinkoff says the collision sent the two vehicles into the ditch.
"The suspect then exited his vehicle in an attempt to leave the scene," said Cpl. Savinkoff. "Our officer, who was injured in the collision, exited his police car and was ultimately able to chase down the suspect and arrest him."
Cpl. Savinkoff says the officer was transported to hospital for treatment and has since been released. He also notes that witness testimony and dashcam video that was recorded during the incident shows the pickup truck accelerating towards and intentionally ramming the officer.
34-year-old Mitchell Donald Culhane has been charged with multiple offences:
- Aggravated assault on a Police Officer;
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
- Fail to stop at an accident-causing bodily harm;
- Resist arrest.
"Since 2023, instances of assault on police with a weapon or causing bodily harm have increased by 23% in the province," said Inspector Kiel Samotej, Detachment Commander Leduc RCMP. "Although violence against police is rising, our officers are trained, equipped, and prepared to respond decisively. The resilience shown by our officers ensures we can continue serving the public with confidence."
Culhane was remanded into custody with his next court date set for Dec. 11, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Leduc.
