Leduc continues push for municipal boundary expansion

LEDUC -- The City of Leduc is set to begin the public engagement process for its proposed municipal boundary expansion.

The expansion was first set in motion in February 2025 when Leduc announced their plans to annex a portion of Leduc County lands to the south and southeast of the City. In a statement, the City of Leduc said the move would allow them to support the long-term growth of the municipality and facilitate coordinated planning and infrastructure investment.

As part of the process, a technical study was then undertaken heading into the summer. This included a growth management study, historical resource study, agricultural assessments, transportation and infrastructure studies, an environmental and natural areas assessment, and a fiscal impact assessment.

For the next stage of their work towards completion of the annexation process, the City of Leduc will now host a variety of public engagement sessions in the coming weeks as well as an online survey. Leduc staff say this will allow the public to learn more about the annexation process, the results of last summer's technical studies, what's coming next, and how to get involved.

For affected owners in the proposed annexation area, the first round of public engagement will take place on Jan. 28 from 1–3 p.m. and Jan. 29 from 6–8 p.m. In addition, the general public can attend separate sessions on Jan. 28 from 6–8 p.m. and Jan. 29 from 1–3 p.m. These sessions will be the first of three rounds of public engagement about the annexation.

Also scheduled for later this month is municipal negotiations with Leduc County. What that process will look like has not been specified by either the City or the County. When the annexation plans were first announced, Leduc County Mayor Tanni Doblanko expressed her disappointment due to what she called a lack of consultation with her jurisdiction. However, in their most recent update, the City of Leduc says they are committed to working collaboratively and in good faith with Leduc County.
