EDMONTON -- It was a strong showing for local students at a recent provincial skills competition in Edmonton.
The Skills Canada Alberta competition is an annual, high-level event where approximately 700 students compete in over 45 skilled trades and technology areas, showcasing excellence to industry leaders. It was held between May 6th and 7th at the Edmonton EXPO Centre.
In the category of 'Precision Machining', students with the Black Gold School Division captured all three podium spots. Securing first place was Adam Peterson of Calmar Secondary Collegiate School, who will now represent Alberta at the national competition.
Darren Roth, who has taught machining and other classes at CSCS for 28 years, says seeing Calmar students sweep the podium in Precision Machining was a proud moment after years of work in the shop classroom.
"The doors that can open for these students by doing well at this sort of thing -- businesses are basically lining up to hire these kids once they get done," said Roth. "Seeing their dedication pay off like this is always gratifying."
In addition to Peterson's first-place finish, several other local students with the BGSD also secured placements in the top-10 within a variety of fields. Students from Leduc Composite High School and École Secondaire Beaumont Composite High School also participated, representing the division in Cabinetmaking, Graphic Design, Electrical Installations, Workplace Safety, and Junior High Culinary.
"We are proud of all of the Black Gold students who participated in provincial Skills," said Erin Tisdale, Director of Curriculum and Instruction with the Black Gold School Division. "Learning alongside skilled tradespeople gives our students an exciting and solid foundation for their career journey."
The division notes that their thirteen participating students all left the competition with more experience, greater confidence, and a clearer sense of where their skills can take them next.
