PONOKA -- Wolf Creek Public Schools is raising alarm over the number of drivers unsafely passing local school buses.
The division's transportation department says that as of the first week of October, bus drivers had filed 18 reports of vehicles passing WCPS buses while students were entering and exiting their school bus. Betty Clark, WCPS Director of Transportation, says this sort of reckless behaviour is unacceptable and puts the safety of students at risk.
"The safety of our children is of utmost importance," said Clarke. "This year we have seen the highest number of drivers reported for passing a school bus while the red flashing lights and stop signs have been activated."
She notes that bus camera footage from 10 out of the 18 incidents has been sent to local police services for prosecution. Meantime, at their Board of Trustees meeting on Oct. 22, Board Chair Luci Henry expressed her dismay at the number of incidents reported so far this year.
The transportation department notes that the flashing yellow lights are an indication to drivers that the bus is about to stop and pick up or drop off students. Drivers are reminded that passing a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing and stop sign is engaged, carries significant penalties, including heavy fines and demerit points.
