PONOKA -- A fire at an abandoned home on 53 Avenue in Ponoka remains under investigation.
Ponoka County Fire Services say the fire broke out on the evening of November 27, 2025, at 5208 53 Avenue in the Town of Ponoka. Fire crews with the East District arrived on scene a short time later, and discovered flames on the north side of the single-family dwelling in a porch addition. They say that two apparatus responded with an engine in the front and aerial apparatus at the rear.
Due to the structural integrity of the residence, the department says the fire was fought from the exterior only, with priority being the protection of adjacent structures. As the structure was abandoned at the time, a Fire Investigator was contacted and attended the scene. In a statement provided to 89.7 The One, Ponoka County Fire Services says the exact cause will not be released as the fire is still under investigation.
They note that the fire at the vacant residence was contained within two hours and overhaul was conducted thereafter to ensure no there were no remaining hotspots. Crews remained on scene for four additional hours before returning to the fire hall.
The Fire Department says they were able to contain the fire to the north side of the structure, with part of the roofline collapsing while walls remained standing.
