RIMBEY -- Junior hockey could be on its way back to Rimbey for the first time since 2011.
This comes as local community members and businesses are seeking a new team to join the Heritage Junior Hockey League. According to a letter penned to Rimbey Council by resident Garrett Dick, the new prospective Junior-B team would join the HJHL for the 2026-2027 season, if their plans move forward.
With the HJHL currently in an expansion process, Dick is now seeking clarification on available ice times at the local arena as part of their application with the league. The regular season is a 38-game schedule with 19 home games, with playoffs commencing immediately following the conclusion of the season.
The Town of Rimbey was last represented in the HJHL by the Rimbey Rock, who first entered the league in 2003. They ran into trouble during the 2010-2011 season when they were suspended by the league for not having enough players, and were then completely removed from the league soon after. Since then, junior hockey has been absent from the Rimbey community.
The Heritage Junior Hockey League is sanctioned by Hockey Canada and Hockey Alberta, and has nearby teams in Ponoka, Red Deer, and Sylvan Lake.
