RCMP provide update on recent police incidents

PONOKA -- Alberta RCMP have provided an update on a pair of recent police incidents in Ponoka.

Speaking to 89.7 The One, Corporal Mathew Howell confirmed that the first incident involved two attempted armed robberies that occurred in the afternoon of Thursday, Apr. 2. Cpl. Howell says that a male suspect attempted to rob the Leland Hotel and Bar at 1:17 in the afternoon while armed with a pellet gun and a knife.

The suspect is also alleged to have attempted a second robbery at the Royal Hotel a short time later, before being arrested and taken into police custody. RCMP have not yet disclosed the name of the individual, nor the extent of the charges he is facing. More details are expected soon.

Police have also confirmed that two suspects are being sought in connection to a pellet gun shooting that occurred over the weekend. While the exact location of the incident has not been released by police, members of the public have reported that it took place in the United Church area.

Cpl. Howell says that two suspects discharged pellet guns at two individuals before fleeing the scene in a grey Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle is reported to have fled north of the crime scene, and the suspects have yet to be apprehended. The victims of the shooting suffered minor injuries, according to police.
