PONOKA COUNTY -- The latest crime statistics from Ponoka RCMP show a significant decline in property crimes.
This continues a recent trend from across Central Alberta that has seen noteworthy decreases in several property crime-related categories throughout 2025. In their Q2 report, which covers the months of July, August, and September, the Mounties say one of the biggest decreases came in regards to thefts under $5,000.
During the second quarter, there were four recorded incidents of theft under $5,000 in Ponoka County, which is down from nineteen during the same period in 2024. During Q2 2024, there were a total of twelve incidents of break-and-enters across the County, while during the second quarter of this year, there were only four. Cases of possession of stolen goods also fell during Q2, as there were five incidents as opposed to twelve during the same period last year.
In most categories, overall crime has been declining over the past year in Ponoka County, however, there was a slight uptick in incidents of criminal harassment. The biggest increase was in cases listed under the Mental Health Act, as these numbers spiked to 33 from July to September, marking a five-year high.
One of the cases of note from the second quarter involved a lockdown incident at Mamawi Atosketan School on September 11, 2025. While details have not been released, members with the Ponoka RCMP attended the school in the days following to provide statistics-based information to teachers and administration regarding active threat situations and how to manage them effectively.
