PONOKA -- The Town of Ponoka will be hosting 'Winter Day in the Park' on Saturday.

The family-friendly winter community event will be held for the first time and will take place at Lions Centennial Park (on Highway 2A, north of Highway 53). According to Ponoka staff, the festivities will get underway from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.

"This fun family event brings a new attraction to our community during the winter months," said Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson. "Winter Day in the Park celebrates community spirit and outdoor recreation. It showcases just one of the many winter activities that make our town your go-to winter destination."

Some of the activities scheduled for the event will include a live ice-carving demonstration along with an ice-carving station. Participants will be given a piece of ice, safety glasses, a small chisel and instructions on how to create their own small ice carving.

In addition, there will also be a bonfire, tobogganing (in front of the stage area) and free hot dogs and hot chocolate. Originally, the Town of Ponoka had also planned on having skating along the ice trail, but that was cancelled due to warm temperatures.

All of the event's other activities are still set to go despite the recent warmth across the region.
