PONOKA -- 77 students crossed the stage as part of this year's Ponoka Secondary graduation ceremony.
The milestone achievement was celebrated at the Ponoka Arena by families, friends, staff, trustees, dignitaries, and community supporters, all of whom gathered to recognize the achievements of Ponoka Secondary Campus' Class of 2026. The ceremony took place on June 6 and included remarks from local MP Blaine Calkins, Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson, and Valedictorian Sara Sharma.
In her address, Sharma reflected on the friendships, experiences, and challenges shared by the Class of 2026, and encouraged classmates to appreciate the paths that lie ahead. She also expressed gratitude to teachers, family, and classmates for their support.
"Stop trying to be someone else’s masterpiece," Sharma said in her address to her fellow graduates. "The world needs your individuality, your story, and your gifts."
For Blaine Calkins, who represents Ponoka-Didsbury in the House of Commons, his remarks reflected on his own graduation experience. He encouraged the graduating students of Ponoka Secondary to embrace new opportunities with confidence.
"Most people are far more capable than they realize," said Calkins. "Step outside your comfort zone, say yes to opportunities, and never underestimate what you are capable of accomplishing."
He also emphasized the importance of character, reliability, and giving back to others, while reminding students to remember the families, teachers, coaches, and mentors who helped them reach graduation day. Mayor Kevin Ferguson echoed similar sentiments, encouraging graduates to discover what inspires them and to commit fully to achieving their goals.
The ceremony also recognized student excellence by presenting a total of 25 scholarships and awards. The honours acknowledged outstanding achievement in various areas, including academics, athletics, community involvement, and more, highlighting the diverse talents and contributions of students throughout their high school careers.
